Post 9 The Mapuche Conflict

I think this is a very complex and delicate subject, I always hears about how the foreign people didn’t respect the rights of the native people, this is not only a problem in Chile, is the same in other countries like United States or Brazil.
First we need to understand this problem, the Mapuche Conflict (or Mapuche issue) is referred to the revival and reorganization of the Mapuche communities for autonomy and land reclamation since the return of democracy in Chile primarily through footage claimed and intimidating land owners and staff of these lands with armed or incendiary attacks. Their demands revolve around three areas: judicial independence (own right), the return of the lands, financial claims and cultural identity.
If we understand that these people don’t feel they belong to Chile, is hard to say is there is an easy resolution of this conflict. Moreover the politicians became this entire subject in a circus; for example was applied an antiterrorist law, they expropriate Mapuche’s lands and always make promise they don’t pretend to fulfill; this action made more strained the relation between the Mapuche and the Chileans.
It is hard to see how your own country is separated in different thoughts and with an impossibility to make an agreement about all the need from each faction. Who have to make the first approach, I think the government, but like I say, they transform this subject in a circus, they don’t pretend to take with seriousness the Mapuche conflict.
Also I don’t approve any of the ways used for the Mapuches, I think that sometimes they are really terrorist. There is no possible explanation that can justify they behavior, more people would die because they risky actions, besides no one will be benefit because they criminal and violent actions.
I Hope someone could mediated in this situation and have a peaceful resolution. Sometimes is difficult to understand the human’s actions

Post 8: My thesis

My thesis is the development of a simulation model of the oxygen transport in soil with 3 to 5 % of Organic Matter content, this wasn’t my original subject, but after a few discussions with my tutor we decided this topic as the most suited thesis to develop.
In O’Higgins, agriculture is one of the most important economics activities, and the fruit production is very sensitivity about environmental stress like unbalanced water content in soil, this unbalanced could causes water deficit in plant or stomatal closure because oxygen deficit to root respiration.
Oxygen is necessary to plant and microorganism respiration, without oxygen the soil is unable to maintain his basics functions. In the same way, begin anaerobics processes and the soil accumulates carbon dioxide, this gas inhibits the roots growth.
To improve the irrigation management is necessary to know the behavior of oxygen and water in soil, bad irrigation management generally cause oxygen deficit and the problems that I mention above.
Therefore the main reason to my thesis is to develop a tool to predict the oxygen concentration in soil, however there isn’t the same level of knowledge of this subject than in other countries, even when the soil that were used has less than 2% of organic matter content, making compulsory to our country have studies in this field of research.
I hope that my thesis became a useful tool to the agronomist, which allows to improving the irrigation management in fruits orchards independent of the soil type.
I forgot to mention that the soil type is highly related with the air capacity of a soil and also with the soil capacity to content water or oxygen, plus uncorrected agricultural management, the oxygen content will be diminish to dangerous level to plants growth.
This study could be just the beginning of other thesis that might find more suitable equations to oxygen diffusion or apply the same methodology to other conditions.

Post 7: Environment

First of all, I think that in this particular topic our society not so concern. Let this subject in different topics.
Pollution, could be one of the more important topics related with the human activities and environment, there is no anthropic actions without consequences thus all the activities we make generate environmental pollution. There is any way maintain our activities and generate zero pollution, in my opinion that is impossible, because we generate direct or indirect pollution and pollution could be chemical or physical, is not only related with waste or gas emissions, for example if we use the water of a river and the return the same amount of water to the river course, but with different temperature our activity generate pollution. Pollution is a very complex concept involves a lot of things related with the environment.
Climate change, in my opinion climate is always changing. The Earth is always in cooler o warmer cycles, we have son proves in the analysis that some researcher did in the Antarctic ice. Don’t you remember that in the 80’s we were talking about a new glaciations, because the temperatures were lower than the average of the 60’s or 70’s, but now we are talking that the Earth is getting warmer and this rise of temperature is related with the carbon dioxide. One of the most affrighting things of this assumption is that could be based in wrong information and in exponential model (the exponential model always rise). I think that we are not the problem…we need put all our effort in the previous topic.
Renewable energies, the renewable energies could the solution to the fossils fuels, one of the most important needs to a develop society is the energy, countries like USA or German consumes between 15 to 50 times the energy that we use in Chile, and they are changing from fossils fuels to renewable energies form the wind or the sun. This could the solution to some of our present problems, but we need to research more.
Carbon and Water footprint, the anthropics activities could be measure with these indexes, both are important and represent different thought the how to see the environment. In my opinion both could be used to make the difference in our actions, but nobody is teaching us the relevance of the environment in our life and how every step we make have a repercussions not only in our life but in the Earth.

Post 5: about the miners

First of all, I need to say that this entire problem is related with our politics, is strange to know that the mining laws are stronger than others, and yet is so basic our technology in the mining industry compared with the profits that this activity generates, I think this is a big paradox; and the recent accident is the probe about this though. Besides, I didn’t saw a real demonstration of goodwill to change this sad reality. In the other hand I hope that our authorities take note on how irregular is the reality of the mining industry, and with that they begin to supervise all the companies, until now, the supervision wasn’t strong enough, so the mining industry didn´t correct their faults related with the workers security.
Maybe someday we will saw a movie relate with this event, like the movie “Alive” (1993) that describe the accident of a Uruguayan rugby team in “Los Andes”. I think that this particular event was much more tragic that the miners accident, because until now no one has died, and they are healthy and safe in the security zone. In fact we’re expecting to save every one without casualties.
Finally, I’m waiting for the safe return of each miner, not only because their family is waiting for them, because all Chile are praying for their lives. This could be one of the most unexpected results in the history of our nation, but happily is a happy ending.

About our Bicentenary

I always believe that September 18th is the most important celebration of our country. Long ago I meet a German and an Argentinian, they tell me that they don't have a celebration like our. For the Argentinian our celebration is like the days that they won the worldcup. They believe that we have a great patriotism.

I think that these days are going to be a big celebration; unfortunately we're not going to have the celebration that we think some years ago, with a lot of monuments or building inaugurations, because in one hand we have to remember that our country had to overcome economical problems, an the other hand we need to remind that our government not always do what they promise.

I think that we have to use these days to share with our family, take some time to think about we expect for the next years and make a goal for us. Also, we have to celebrate our bicentenary and separate sometime to visit historical places, go to places that are related to our independency and get more information about what we’re celebrating. I must say that I never play some Chilean games like “greasy pole” or “catch the pig”, I never been in a “Rodeo”, that is maybe I think that these days are a very good opportunity to try some of them, because they are part of Chilean culture

Finally one of the things that I believe that are wrong: some people don’t know about what we’re celebrating, and they think that September, especially September 18th, is only to fly a kite or a few days of holidays that we can use to go outside of Chile.

POST 3: A place to visit

I want to go to England, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Italy, French...just a few countries, jejejeje.

I want to know the culture of these countries, for example I want to walk near the Eiffel tower, or get to the Vatican and go to the Sistine Chapel, see the Coliseum in Rome, I think with all these countries I have a lot of tourist places to visit. Also I want to taste the food and beverage from each one, until now I can only taste the food from the restaurant that I visit in Chile, but I think that the taste or flavors will be different if I eat in each country.

If I have to choose one of theme, maybe I will choose New Zealand, one of the reasons is that New Zealand is similar to Chile. Both are in the same hemisphere and share some of same flora (long time ago we were united as one continent, Godwana) and climatic characteristic, so will be nice to know a place similar to my country. The other reason is because they make great advances in subjects related to my career (renewable energies, environmental care or ecological studies) so be there could be a very good experience, in professional terms. I don’t know anything about the food…so could be a risk to me, because I don’t have a strong stomach and I could get sick very easy, but in life we have to take risk to get what we want.

Post 11: About My work

To star I' m trying to apply in an oxygen transport model, this model is kind of special because is a model that estimate the oxygen content on soil. The oxygen is a very important element, the oxygen content is related with soil properties and you can make a balance between the soil water content and the air capacity, this parameter
This parameter can determinate the soil health, because is related to the soil respiration (that is the microbial and plant respiration). If the oxygen on soil is not enough, we will have a reduction of the agriculture production.
There is not easy to estimate the oxygen soil content, because it depends in a lot of soil parameters; like soil water content, soil porosity, bulk density, soil diffusivity an others. Until now I’m very concern because I don’t know so much of soil physics, so I need to learn in the least time possible and I think I need to put a lot of effort to understand all the relations that are in involved….; this work is a very hard challenge… but like I say long time ago, I’m very happy to be here, in this PhD program

Post 10 : Blogging Experience

mmm.....I can say that blogging is not something new for me, I already have two more blogs... so write things in a webpage is something that I used to do it, but is the first time or is my first blog that I must write every sentences in another language, for me was difficult in the beginning, because I wasn't used to write so often in English, but with each blog has been getting easier, I know that make a lot of mistakes and I need to improve in grammar, listening and conversation (also my vocabulary)… to have a better fluidity, I never know when I going to be in some place that I really need to communicate with others, and the only way is to know English or another language (maybe in the future try to learn French again or try with other).

I believe that the advantages of blogging in English are:

1.- I was force to think and write in a different way that I use to, because the English grammar is different in some ways that Spanish grammar

2.- Also I was forced to write a minimum number of words, so I had to be very creative to full fit the assignment.

3.- How the topics are different each week, and not always I have a deep knowledge about the topics, I need to search information and be creative to explain the thought or my impression about the subject.

The disadvantages, I believe are these:

1.- I only have to write, I don’t do any listening or conversation, so something I find a new word but I don’t know how to say it.

2.- Even all speak Spanish, when people from another country came to our country is very difficult to established real communication with them, that I because we can’t speak well.

3.- In the other hand, to communicate with others is very important to understand the things that they are saying to us, but when we aren’t used to listen, that process became difficult or impossible.

For me was and is a very good experience, and I glad that we complement the blogs with the oral class, I believe that is the best way to learn others languages, not only English.

post 10: a very nice day

I can't just use only one picture to talk about a nice day, so I'll use two to show you. This was my grandfather birthday. In the first picture I was playing with my cousin, in that time he has only one year old, and was a restless kid, that characteristic hasn’t changed over time, so I finished exhausted. You can also see my mother; she is with her back to us.

In the second picture, you can almost see all my family, for my father side; is easy for me to recognize my brother, how is taking the baby buggy, and my cousins is near him. I also see one of my aunts, my parents and my grandparents.

That day we travel to Rio Clarillo, is a very beautiful place. But Rio Clarillo was close to the tourist, so my advice to you is ”you need to go there early”. But we solve the problem going to a place near, "El Parque Aleman", that place is a camping site with a pool and barbecues. We ate a lot, we cook meat, chicken, sauces, salad and also bought some snacks.

That day was special, not only because was my 78 years old birthday; also because my grandfather didn’t go out so often, so was a very big event. Even was a restless day, I finished happy for all the things that I did, like babysitting my cousin Daniel, play and talk with my other cousins (Diego, Gabriela and Jennifer). In the afternoon, we bought homemade bread from a rural store. Then each one returns to their home.

Post 9: Ideas worth spreading

I believe that every word that Sir Ken Robinson says is true. One of the most important things for us, as mankind, is the education; because knowledge is the base of our society and also the renewal resources for our future. However, right now we have fundamentals problem with our education system, our politician believe that we need to standardized the common knowledge, so the teachers teach to everyone the same, is true that we need a common base to understand the world a his relations or to choose a different path suit to our desires or dreams, but is impossible to teach the same to each one, because we have different capacities and talents.

The education is a fundamentals subject for every country; a very good example is the case of Japan. After the second war their country was in ruins and his economy unsustainable, the politician decide to send people to study in the best universities of the world, 50 years later, Japan become in one of the most important economics of the world. This example is a prove of the importance of the Education.

However we can say that is difficult to notice an improvement of the educational systems, due to how mechanistic is the educations today or how the economical profits regulate the systems. These are not only politician problems, they are also a people problems, because we all have to make an effort, is not a choice don't do something to achieve a better education system, where the knowledge is not standardized and the choice ore dreams are depleted by profits. Our future is in jeopardy¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡

Post 8: TRIPS

I never go to another country, so my trips they are always here in Chile.

I can divide my trips in two categories: first are vacations and second work trips. For my vacation trips I usually went to Chiloé, because my godfather lives there, all the times that I went to visit my Godfather (also is my Uncle) I ate a lot, my ant is a very handy cook, so any meal is delicious, I ate crabs, clams, baby mussel, mussel, fish (any kind), cheese, yoghurt, chapalele, milkao and Pulmay, so always I back to my home with a least 3 to 4 kilos more.

My Grandparents, for my father side, are from Talca, but I went to Talca when I was a child so I don’t remember so much of these trips. I went to Villarica when I have 13 years old, was a very funny trip, we share a house with my ant, uncle and cousin, we went to a hot springs in Coñaripe and visit “los ojos del Caburga”.

My grandfather, for my mother side, bought a hill near to Casa Blanca, one time we went to celebrated my grandfather‘s birthday, I remember him so happy because all the people that went to share that moment with him, also he was happy because I just was accepted in the University, he died that year, that was the last time that I was there.

All the times that I went to Viña del Mar was because my uncle and ant invited me, the last time that I went to Viña del Mar was because a work trip, I present a poster in a scientific meeting.

Post 7: About movies

Well, today I'm going to talk about movies... what types of movies I like, I really like all types of movie, more than types I prefer to tell you some names of movies.

I always like animated movies, like Beauty and the Beast (1991), The Lion King (1994), Aladino (1992) and all the Disney's movies. In the recent years Pixar and Gibli are taking some higher relevance, they have beautiful movies, for example Wall-e (2008) and Up (2009) in the case of Pixar Animated studios, I'm just waiting for Toy Story 3 (2010); in the case of the Studio Gibli we have Tonari no Totoro (1988), the picture below is Totoro, and Mononoke-Hime (1997), I can mentioned a lot more but I thinks this is enough. Did you see Hotaru no Aka (1988) or Sen to Chihiro no Kamikasuhi (2001)?

You heard about Rashomon (1950), is a japanese movie that show the relation between observer-event, I really want to see it; also I want to see Metropolis (1927) , The Third Man (1949) and Citizen Kane (1941), these movies are considered as Classic Movies and is necessary to see it for culture. Talking about culture, some movies are part of our culture, and even if you don't see it, you can recognize some cliche from theme, like "I'm your father" from Star Wars. Also some movies make reference from "The Godfather" or "Matrix".

Finally you you need to see "Old Boy" (2003) and "Symphaty for lady vengeance"(2005) from the same director, the Koreans films are very good; and Pi (1998).

POST 6: WEBPAGES

I really like several WebPages, but there is not so much related to my profession, and with the related ones is possible to split them in two categories, the first is for look up information, and the second are for searching jobs.

For the first category I am going to mention only one Webpage: Science Direct, because I currently use it to find scientist works related to renewable resources, environmental modeling, remote sensing and Geographic Information System. It is really awesome the things that someone can find there. Scielo is like Science Direct but is a Webpage dedicated to Chilean journals, but doesn't have the so many scientist works like Science Direct




In the second category I have two pages,one of them I found it when I was searching for a job, this is Sustentable, this is a very simple Webpage, compare with others WebPages that I like; the second Webpage is Fundacion Chile, somebody that studied my same career and actually is working there tell me about the things that Fundacion Chile is doing not only to protect the environment, but also improvement the technology in the Industry and the Agro-Forest management.

POST 5:Les Animaux du Chili

To begin I want to say that I like cats, why?...well because they're mini lions, jajaja... sorry I was joking, I likes cats because they are beautiful animals, also I prefer cats because they're autonomous animals. But this is only talking about pets.

In the other hand, I want to mention that in Chile we have the very beautiful and unique fauna. For example: the Monito del monte and the yaca, the only marsupials in Chile,this is possible because once the Antartic, Africa, Australia an South America were joined. Once I hear that 42% of our frogs are autochthonous, so is only possible to find them here, like the Ranita de Darwin.

Also I can tell you wich animals are native but not autochthonous, like chickens, rabbits, wild boars, ferrets, Salmons, African frogs; the last four have a big impact over the environment, for example wild boar eat the eggs from the birds of the south of Chile, like Chucao. All the animals that I mentioned above came to Chile because economic concern.

I'm sure that I miss a lot of extraordinary animals, but I only have 200 words. Finally, I'm thinking of buy me a Chinchilla for a pet.

Post 4: crisis of the Catholic Church

To begin I can say that I belong to the Catholic Church, so is very difficult to express myself with objetivy. All I know about the church was because of the teaching of my grandparents and parents. I also was part of the church’s activities when I was a monitor of the Confirmation, and I have the privilege to share activities with my church's priest.

Right now we can say that the church is passing through a crisis because of the sex scandals in which priests are involved, this has a direct effect on people who follow the catholic doctrine. One of the solutions that I always hear is that the priest need to get married, the catholic’s common knowledge say that the priest are married with The Virgin, someday I ask to a priest about that and he told me that this is a terrible mistake, so why the priest don’t have a wife, that is because they dedicate their lives to church, with the church I mean all the people that we calls as believers.

All the people are asking why the priest can do these horrible things…. Unfortunately the priests are only men, and they can commit the same mistakes that us, but their conditions, as men of god, implies a greater responsibility for the trust that people placed in them.

The Catholic Church is based on values and traditions; however it is difficult for any man to perform their actions according to these values and traditions.

Post 3: About my musical taste

There are too many things I can say so I'm going to start whit this link, in this page you're going to see how many groups I listen to, and also how many times I was listening to their songs. I really like to hear alternative music.

I can say that I have only been in two concerts: De Saloon, a Chilean group settled in Mexico, and Faith No More, the last one was the most expensive but also the most rewarding, I still have the photos and videos that I took with my cellphone from the concert. I take this video from the web to show you all how the concert started.


If you ask about to recommend some groups I'm going to tell you that you must listen:
Alternative Music: Sparta, Deftones, Audioslave, Muse and Incubus
Soul: Aretha Franklin and James Brown
Instrumental: Explosion in the sky and 65 days of statics

This is olny related to music groups.

Also I can say that my child's dream was to play piano or violin, I like to listen both instruments, make me calm. I can say that the most beautiful songs that I ever listen had one or both instruments playing.

About the earthquake

That’s night I was sleeping, when the earthquake star I believed that was only a tremor and not an earthquake, “just one more” I say to myself; mainly because start very slow...but suddenly everything change and start to move very much. So my father tells to everyone to get up and find somewhere safe, we can hear how my mother's decorations fell down and got smash up with the floor...it wasn't a very good noise, but that’s decorations was the only things we lost.

But I was still sleepy, also without electricity and cellphone, so I can't really noticed the seriously of the matter.

I had the fortune to spoke with my grandmother and two uncles, but we're concerned for one of my uncles because he was in Quintero, near to the beach, finally nothing happens to my family. So I can thank to goodness that nothing happens to my family.

About my self

I believe I don't have so much to tell about myself, i can say I’m very reserved...my expectations about English are to improvement my skills...I want to visit another country, that's the main reasons to begin English's class. How knows maybe someday I can visit another country, like England or Australia, also I’ll like to visit Japan or Europe, but only for travel.

I took the liberty to put another things to my blogs....I hope it is doesn't mind. I put an application that could use to listen music...actually these is my musical taste.
